U13s GLADIATORS

Hungry Like The Wolf

(MARTYN SCOBBIE 23/09/2019)
Game #2 of the new season and another challenge for us playing against a team that had retained its place in Division 2 from last season.

The weather gods had decided to test us and the Grappenhall pitches with an overnight deluge of Biblical proportions.
Stockton Lane was awash but the pitch was in tip-top condition and the football we played complemented the superb (and nicely trimmed) playing surface.

Witton Wolves came into the game on the back of a win vs Grappenhall Tigers and a substantial hammering of Middlewich Town.
Watching their warm ups and noting the physical presence of a couple of their players who were a head taller than most of our (and at least 2 taller than Nick), the game looked like it would be a good test of our ambition to compete in division 2 and not suffer the "whipping boy" curse of some promoted teams.

Overall the effort and skill shown by the team was exemplary. The players worked hard on and off the ball and despite Witton's resolute defending, getting bodies behind the ball and a fortuitous early goal from a corner, the result went in Grappenhall's favour.

An early set behind as we conceded from a corner was soon put behind us as Sam equalised and Ben took us into a first half 2-1 lead.

Disappointing to hear at half time that our players were subject to jibes, one example being "You're a division 3 team" but even more pleasing that they gave as good as they got in retorting "Then why are we beating you?"
We've always asked our players to give as good as they get whether that be in the physical or mental aspect of the Game.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first - we lost Max to a muscle pull and Marko to a footwear related incident (despite the best Blue Peter efforts of supporters) but the team managed through this with Luke performing the centre back role admirably. Harry F impeded the attacking threat posed by Witton's #12 and was never more than a footstep away from him!

The second half saw 3 more goals and 2 yellow cards (one to each team), which were both fair - the referee contributed to a good game allowing advantage to play out, instructing the players for their future development and justly penalising foul throws.

Goals from Isaac (a lovely header from a Charlie cross)and OJ made the result comfortable before Charlie topped off his Gladiators debut with the fifth goal!

Player of the day: Charlie Cliffe
